• Healing Gim Nahk-bum’s Smallpox
  • In Jeonju County, Gim Nahk-bum’s son, Suk, suffered from an eye disease that rendered him blind. Sahng-jeh-nim looked at the boy’s eyes and then transferred the disease to Himself. Sahng-jeh-nim suffered from the eye disease for a while, and then it disappeared.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim once stayed at an inn on Yohng-muh-ree Hill. Nahk-bum, who had smallpox, attended on Him with dedication.
  • One day, Sahng-jeh-nim suddenly became angry and censured Nahk-bum, “How can you be so idle in front of your elder?”
  • Feeling both ashamed and confused, Nahk-bum bowed his head without speaking a word and then rose to leave the room.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim continued, “Where are you trying to go when an elder is scolding you?”
  • Overpowered by Sahng-jeh-nim’s command, Nahk-bum stopped and just sat sweating nervously.
  • After the unexpected reproof, he returned home trying to think of his failings. He could not figure out what he had done wrong, but continued to feel ashamed.
  • After the incident, Nahk-bum’s smallpox soon healed. He came to realize that Sahng-jeh-nim’s anger and reproof were medicine.
