• Curing Gim Gyung-hahk and His Son
  • Gim Gyung-hahk’s twenty-one-year-old son, Yohng-ju, had been suffering from lung disease for many years and was nearing death.
  • Whenever Gyung-hahk spoke of this to Sahng-jeh-nim, his son became better, but after a long while, began to suffer from the disease again. The whole household was deeply worried.
  • One night, Sahng-jeh-nim came to their house and walked toward Yohng-ju’s bedroom. At that time, Yohng-ju was in a coma, nearing death.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim scolded him loudly from outside the door. “I, your Father, have come. Why do you not get up to greet Me? Where did you learn such manners? Get up this instant!” Yohng-ju suddenly regained consciousness.
  • Gyung-hahk tried to help his son, but Sahng-jeh-nim insisted that he get up on his own.
  • Yohng-ju rose with difficulty, his body shaking. Sahng-jeh-nim made him go outside and run around for a while. Afterward, Sahng-jeh-nim said, “Bring him his dinner.” Yohng-ju’s mother replied that the rice was cooking.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim said, “We cannot wait for the rice to cook. Bring the bowl of rice that was kept aside for him at dinner time.”
  • Gyung-hahk told Sahng-jeh-nim that the rice had gone cold. “It does not matter,” Sahng-jeh-nim insisted. “Bring the bowl of rice here.” He told Yohng-ju to eat. Yohng-ju ate about two thirds of the rice.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim said, “Since you can run around and eat so much, you are not sick.” The next day, Sahng-jeh-nim left for Jung-eup County, and Yohng-ju’s sickness was completely cured.
  • 10 Gyung-hahk thought it strange that Sahng-jeh-nim had used the word father when talking to Yohng-ju. He contemplated it for a while and remembered that, following the custom of presenting a child at a temple, he had presented his child in front of the Maitreya statue of Geum-sahn Temple. Gyung-hahk realized that Sahng-jeh-nim was the embodiment of Maitreya.
  • 17 Afterward, Gyung-hahk himself became critically ill. Knowing this, Sahng-jeh-nim boiled a packet of four-herb medicine and then poured it on the ground. He told Gyung-hahk, “Look up into the moonlight.” Gyung-hahk did as instructed and soon recovered.
