• The Medicine Cabinet’s Layout
and Its Significance in the Work of Renewal
  • The medicine cabinet was a little more than five ja in width and three ja in height.
  • At the bottom, there was one big drawer; just above it, there was a row of three middle-sized drawers; above that, there were three rows of small drawers, five in each row.
  • On the drawer in the center of the fifteen small drawers, Sahng-jeh-nim wrote, “Danzhu receives a mandate.” Then, He put in it tree peony bark.
  • On the same drawer, He wrote, “Do not go astray amid strong wind, thunder, and rain” and “Tae-eul Mantra.”
  • In the drawer above that, He put snakegourd root, and in the drawer below, honeysuckle flower.
  • On a long strip of paper, He wrote the characters of the Chil-sung-gyung Mantra in one vertical line.
  • Under that, in a horizontal line, He wrote, “Walking as swiftly as King Yu, ascend to a bright world.”
  • At the bottom of the paper, He wrote, “Solar calendar June 20. Lunar calendar June 20.” He then pasted the strip of paper on top and down the back of the cabinet.
  • Inside the chest, He wrote “eight gates transformation (八門遁甲),” and over that, using a hot iron, He burned in the words “tongue gate (舌門).” Around it, He made twenty-four dots with red ink.
  • 10 Later, it rained when Gim Byung-ook was coming from Jeonju to bring medicinal herbs.
  • 11 Sahng-jeh-nim said, “This is water for making medicine.”
