• When Works of Renewal Involve Food Offerings
  • When Sahng-jeh-nim was going to conduct a work of renewal that involved a food offering, He would choose a specific date.
  • He had several pigs, dogs, or cows slaughtered, but other food was not prepared.
  • He had sheets of paper piled to the height of one and a half ja. He wrote on these and then burned them. The yard would become like a garden of fire.
  • Once, when walking around looking at what was going on, Ho-yun interrupted. “Why are You burning paper?”
  • Sahng-jeh-nim put His finger to His lips. “Don’t say anything.”
  • Mimicking Him, Ho-yun said, “What is this? Do You need a stick?” Sahng-jeh-nim made a gesture as if to rap His knuckles on her head.
  • Conducting the offering solemnly, Sahng-jeh-nim would not allow any unnecessary talking. But Ho-yun, acting as if she knew what was going on, went around asking this and that.
  • “Come here,” said Sahng-jeh-nim. “Now sit over there.” He wrapped a band of paper around her head, covering her mouth.
  • “Oh, I can’t breathe,” Ho-yun complained, exaggerating her discomfort. “Ow!”
Sahng-jeh-nim loosened the paper. “This little child makes big trouble.”
