• Sahng-jeh-nim Composes Hyun-mu-gyung
  • On the morning of the first day of 1909, Sahng-jeh-nim went to Ahn Nae-sung’s house. There, in the Hour of the Snake, He composed a small book entitled Hyun-mu-gyung.
  • He said, “The principles of heaven and earth and the mysteries of creative change are compiled in Hyun-mu-gyung.”
  • He then wrote some passages on two pieces of paper, rolled them tightly like wicks, and put each in a different white bottle.
  • He sealed the bottles with paper and put them to one side of the room. In front of the bottles, He put down a sheet of white paper and on it laid the book and a small knife.
  • After Sahng-jeh-nim’s ascension, Nae-sung moved to a rented room in Su-tohng-mohk Village where he would meditate with the Tae-eul Mantra for three years. Before moving there, he left Hyun-mu-gyung, the two white bottles, and the knife with Su-bu-nim.
  • Later, Gyung-suk found out about this and pressed Su-bu-nim to give him Nae-sung’s things, until She eventually yielded them.
  • From one of the bottles, Gyung-suk took out the rolled paper. On it was written, “Inauspicious flowers bear inauspicious fruit (凶花開凶實).”
  • He took the rolled paper out of the other bottle. On it was written, “Auspicious flowers bear auspicious fruit (吉花開吉實).”
  • Illness and Healing
  • Gyung-suk then opened Hyun-mu-gyung and read the following:
  • 病有大勢 病有小勢
    大病 無藥 小病 或有藥
    然 大病之藥 安心安身
    小病之藥 四物湯八十貼
  • 10 There are grave illnesses;
    there are minor illnesses.
  • 11 There is no medicine for a grave illness;
    there might be medicine for a minor one.
    Nevertheless, there is medicine for a grave illness:
    comfort the mind and body.
    For a minor illness,
    use eighty doses of the four-herb medicine.

    侍天主造化定永世不忘萬事知 至氣今至願爲大降
  • 12 Prayer
    Serve the Lord of Heaven,
    who comes to the world in person
    and decides creative change.
    Never forget the infinite grace
    that grants enlightenment about all matters.
    Pray that the ultimate qi,
    the ripening qi of autumn,
    abundantly descends from above.
  • 大病 出於無道 小病 出於無道
    得其有道 則大病 勿藥自效 小病 勿藥自效
  • 13 Grave illnesses originate from the absence of dao.
    Minor illnesses also originate from the absence of dao.
    When you have gained dao,
    grave illnesses are healed naturally without any medicine,
    minor illnesses are healed naturally without any medicine.

    至氣今至 禮章
    願爲大降
  • 14 The ultimate qi,
    the ripening qi of autumn,
    arrives in April.
    Pray that the ultimate qi,
    the ripening qi of autumn,
    abundantly descends from above.
  • Healing and Uniting to Cure the World’s Illness

    忘其君者無道 忘其父者無道 忘其師者無道
    世無忠 世無孝 世無烈 是故天下皆病
  • 15 Healing and Uniting
    Those ungrateful to their sovereigns are without dao.
    Those ungrateful to their parents are without dao.
    Those ungrateful to their teachers are without dao.
    In this world, there is no loyalty, filial piety, or fidelity.
    Hence, the whole world suffers from illness.

    有天下之病者 用天下之藥 厥病 乃癒
  • 16 Condition of Illness
    One who has grown ill from frustration in carrying out the work under heaven is cured without any medicine when good news is heard.

  • 18 With great humaneness and great justice, there is no illness.

  • 19 The great ruler spirit, who makes the demons of the three realms yield, is the Sacred King Guan, whose power reaches far and who is highly revered in heaven.
  • Knowing the Flow of the World
  • 知天下之勢者 有天下之生氣
    暗天下之勢者 有天下之死氣
  • 20 Those aware of the flow of the world have the qi of life.
    Those ignorant of the flow of the world have the qi of death.

    西有大聖人 曰西學 都是敎民化民
  • 21 In the East, there is a great sage called Eastern Learning.
    In the West, there is a great sage called Western Learning.
    They both have their purpose in edifying humanity.

  • Sahng-jeh-nim Cautions the Korean People
  • 朝鮮國 上計神 中計神 下計神 無依無托
    不可不 文字戒於人
  • 24 Hwahn-in, Hwahn-oong, and Dahn-goon, the ancestral spirits of Korea, have nothing upon which to rely. I write this to caution you against disavowing your ancestors. You must serve them well.

    先天下之職 先天下之業
    職者醫也 業者統也
    聖之職 聖之業
  • 25 Goong-sahng-gahk-chee-ooh, the musical scale of five notes, was revealed by a sage who listened to the sound of nature, yool-lyuh. A sage puts first the duty and calling that benefit the whole world. The duty is to heal (醫). The calling is to unite (統). It is a sacred duty and a sacred calling.
