• Enlightenment and Authority over the Three Realms
  • Beginning on His fifteenth day at Dae-wun Temple, July 1, Jeung-san did not eat or drink anything for seven days. He meditated with one mind without once moving from where He sat.
  • On July 7, His twenty-first day at the Temple, thunder roared and the earth trembled in the midst of an auspicious heavy rain.
  • Amidst all of this, He became enlightened to the ultimate dao and opened the great gate of the spirit world.
  • From then on, He exercised authority over the three realms and employed at will the universe’s power of creative change.
  • The Moment of Sahng-jeh-nim’s Enlightenment
  • The night before Jeung-san attained enlightenment, He had said to Geum-gohk, “Go over the mountain to Geum-sahn Temple and stay inside the Maitreya Shrine.”
  • As the monk left Dae-wun Temple, he saw a brilliant pillar of fire descending from the sky to the roof of the Seven Stars Shrine.
  • While he was inside the Maitreya Shrine, heaven and earth suddenly shook so hard that it seemed as if the statue and shrine would collapse.
  • Barely able to maintain consciousness and unable to remain upright, the monk clung to a pillar inside the shrine. Despite this, he experienced a state of rapture.
  • At daybreak, he returned to Dae-wun Temple and reported what had happened that night. Geum-gohk realized that, at the moment of his rapture, Jeung-san had attained enlightenment.
  • I Am Ohk-hwahng Sahng-jeh
  • 10 Jeung-san said to Geum-gohk, “Bring Me a bowl of rice soup.” After having the soup, Jeung-san asked,
  • 11 “Geum-gohk, to whom do heaven and earth belong?” Not knowing what to say, Geum-gohk hesitated.
  • 12 In a thunderous voice, Jeung-san proclaimed, “Heaven and earth belong to Me! I am Ohk-hwahng Sahng-jeh.” Then, He laughed loudly.
  • 13 At that moment, the room shone as brightly as if it were midday, and Sahng-jeh-nim’s face was radiant like the sun. Without a thought, Geum-gohk prostrated with his hands held together.
  • 14 Sahng-jeh-nim’s clothes had become too ragged, so He told Geum-gohk to go to His house in Go-bu County to get some new clothes.
