• Sahng-jeh-nim’s True Dharma
  • A disciple said to Sahng-jeh-nim, “In Wun-pyung Village, when You saved a dying child, You used octopus, dried persimmons, and jujubes. We thought to ourselves, ‘Now, we have learned the proper cure.’
  • Yet, this time, for another child with the same symptoms, You had the mother ring the temple bell three times on three consecutive mornings. Now, we all think Your method is indeed difficult to learn.”
  • Sahng-jeh-nim explained, “You are you, and I am I. An enlightened one is awakened to the primordial principle.
  • The ten thousand dharmas do not stay the same. The dharma I use is true dharma. Can you understand this? It is said that not a single word from an enlightened one falls to the ground.”
  • A few days later, the couple came back with a great amount of food.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim asked them, “What is the food for?”
  • The couple kneeled in front of Him and the husband said, “Because we have no land, we sell straw sandals for a living. In the past, no matter how well we made them, we could only get one and a half dohn for a pair. We were barely making a living.
  • Ever since You sold a pair of straw sandals to our rooster for two dohn, we have been able to earn two dohn for our sandals. Now, we are doing well.
  • We realize to whom we owe this good fortune. We owe it to You, the Lord of Heaven. That is why we have prepared some food and have come here with our child who has been cured.”
  • 10 Sahng-jeh-nim laughed and shared the food with His disciples.
  • 11 This strengthened the disciples’ belief that their Teacher was the Lord of Heaven.
