  • “In our practice, one cannot borrow another’s efforts without reason, even if it is only for getting a bowl of water. Even between father and son, or between brothers, do not ask for favors without good reason.
  • “No matter who you meet, welcome them sincerely and treat them well. Though they may not appreciate your hospitality, the spirits know of it, and wherever you go, you will be treated well.
  • “If you are given a bowl of rice, do not forget it. If you are given only half a bowl of rice, do not forget it.
  • There is a saying, ‘Never fail to repay the benevolence of being given a meal.’ But I say, ‘never fail to repay the benevolence of even half a meal.’”
