• Served with Millet Dumplings
  • One night in autumn, accompanied by Hyung-yul, Sahng-jeh-nim went to Gohng-ju County carrying Ho-yun in His arms.
  • On the way, Ho-yun fell asleep, and Sahng-jeh-nim used the sash around His waist to tie her on His back. They arrived at a house in Gohng-ju and went inside.
  • Having run out of rice, the owner picked millet from his field and, in his room, threshed it on a fulling stone to make dumplings for the guests.
  • When Ho-yun wrapped some of the dumplings in a cloth to save for the next day’s journey, Hyung-yul scolded her; but Sahng-jeh-nim said nothing and placed more dumplings in the cloth.
  • A Reprimand for Touching Sahng-jeh-nim
  • The next morning, Ho-yun said, “Maybe they don’t have any rice. Let’s go somewhere else.”
  • After washing His face, Sahng-jeh-nim stood in the middle of the yard, saying something into the air. Before long, a man entered the yard with a sack of rice on his back.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim said to their host, “Last night, you showed extraordinary hospitality by going out into the field to pick millet and making dumplings for us. I cannot just leave. So accept this rice.”
  • “In that case, You should not leave until You have breakfast,” said the owner. “Why are You leaving so early?” The owner took Him by the sleeve.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim thundered, “How dare you put your hands on Me!” Startled, the man immediately removed his hands.
  • 10 Without eating, they again set out on the road. Sahng-jeh-nim began laughing, and Hyung-yul joined in.
  • Ho-yun Carries Food for the Journey
  • 11 Later, along the way, Sahng-jeh-nim shared the dumplings Ho-yun had wrapped in the cloth.
  • 12 He usually gave any food they received on their journeys to Ho-yun to hold on to. She would wrap it in a cloth and carry it.
  • 13 If, after walking some distance, she complained, “My legs hurt. I can’t go on . . . ,” Sahng-jeh-nim would coax her into walking further by letting her eat something or by saying He would carry her when they reached a certain spot.
  • 14 When they got to that place, however, He continued walking until much farther on, and then He would carry her on His back.
  • 15 If the bundle of food swayed to and fro, obstructing Sahng-jeh-nim’s view, He would say, “Throw that thing away!” But Ho-yun would protest, “No, I won’t. I’ll eat it later.”
