• Shin Wun-il Becomes a Disciple
  • On the last day of January 1905, Sahng-jeh-nim and Hyung-yul went to Ee Hwahn-gu’s house in Sung-geun Village, Bu-ahn County, to stay a few days.
  • Since Hwahn-gu spoke highly of Shin Wun-il, who lived in the same village, Sahng-jeh-nim summoned him.
  • When Wun-il came by, he invited Sahng-jeh-nim to stay at his house. Wun-il’s father and younger brother, however, did not have faith in Sahng-jeh-nim and did not want Him to stay for long.
  • Wun-il’s Father Deceives Sahng-jeh-nim
  • Wun-il said to Sahng-jeh-nim, “Because of the typhoons last year, my father, who has long been a fisherman, suffered great loss.
  • It would greatly benefit him if there were no storms this year. That way he could catch a great bounty of fish.” For many days, Wun-il entreated Sahng-jeh-nim to help his father.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim eventually said, “I cannot ignore your concern for your father.
  • It is not a difficult problem. I will grant your wish on condition that your father pledges to the spirits of heaven and earth that he will bring Me one thousand nyahng after he has his good year. I will have use for the money in the future.”
  • Wun-il and his father willingly made the pledge, and that year there were no storms. His father had the largest haul of fish on the Chil-sahn Sea and made a great sum of money as a result.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim sent someone to remind him to send the promised money, but Wun-il’s father refused.
  • 10 Sahng-jeh-nim said to Wun-il, “This is the act of deceiving a great person. My work is planned and carried out in cooperation with spirits. Not a single step can be taken for private gain. From now on, your father will fail at fishing completely.”
  • 11 Wun-il’s father could not catch any fish from that point on and had to abandon fishing.
