• When Sahng-jeh-nim Knocks on a Mountain,
    Music Comes Out
  • One day, Sahng-jeh-nim said during a work of renewal, “A phoenix comes out of Chil-bo Mountain, a crane comes out of Baek-du Mountain, and . . . .” Here He spoke of one more bird and the mountain from which it would come.
  • In conducting works of renewal, Sahng-jeh-nim went from place to place, taking Hyung-yul and Ho-yun with Him. He would often reveal why He had come to a particular place and let them know the meaning of the work.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim preferred visiting the higher mountains and also the bottom of their big waterfalls.
  • When He climbed a mountain to conduct a work of renewal, He would often knock on the mountain. At that moment, the sound of a yahng-geum, a jahng-gu, and drums could be heard from inside the mountain.
  • He once said to Ho-yun, “I am doing this to observe how the il-ggoon will come forth when faced with the gae-byuk of heaven and earth.”
  • A Work of Renewal on a Tree
  • 11 One day, Sahng-jeh-nim climbed a tree and turned Himself into a crow and then a magpie. He flew about and sang like a bird. He then made a flute out of a leaf and played.
  • 12 From below, Hyung-yul played along on Sahng-jeh-nim’s jade flute.
  • Saving Hyung-yul’s Life on Tae-baek Mountain
  • 13 In early spring, Sahng-jeh-nim traveled to many places with Hyung-yul and Ho-yun. One day, they hiked up Tae-baek Mountain, which was lightly covered with snow.
  • 14 While conducting a work of renewal, Sahng-jeh-nim suddenly pointed His finger at Hyung-yul and said, “Move.”
  • 15 Hyung-yul just stood there looking baffled until Ho-yun shouted, “He is telling you to stand in the right place.” Finally, Hyung-yul took a step toward Sahng-jeh-nim; just as he did so, a large rock fell where he had been standing.
  • 16 Sahng-jeh-nim had saved Hyung-yul’s life.
