• Su-bu-nim Finds the Grave
  • When She arrived at Wun-pyung Village, She ordered Yoon-chil to prepare a small offering of fruit, dried fish, and rice wine.
  • With Gyung-suk and Yoon-chil following, She crossed rice paddies and fields and arrived at the temporary grave located at the edge of the bamboo grove behind Hyung-yul’s house in Gu-rit-gohl Village. She ordered Yoon-chil to remove the straw thatch that covered the coffin.
  • Gyung-suk implored, “If the owner of the grave sees us, he will be very angry. Then, what will we do? Let us leave immediately.”
  • Paying no attention, Su-bu-nim began to remove the thatch Herself.
  • With no other choice, Gyung-suk told Yoon-chil to remove the thatch and open the coffin. She saw that the body inside was, indeed, Sahng-jeh-nim’s. His features and appearance showed no change from when He was alive.
  • The Funeral Banner of Ohk-hwahng Sahng-jeh
  • Su-bu-nim opened the pouch, took out seven coins, and placed them in the coffin. Remembering that Sahng-jeh-nim had once said, “After I die, You must put this in My mouth,” She took a pearl from the pouch and put it into His mouth, and She also placed into His mouth three rice grains and three white ba-dook stones. He spat out the stones, and She put them back in the pouch for safekeeping. She then covered His chest with a ceremonial cloth.
  • For His funeral banner, She unrolled the sheet of white paper inscribed “Ohk-hwahng Sahng-jeh (玉皇上帝)” and laid it on the ceremonial cloth. She then closed the coffin lid. Performing a simple ceremony with the prepared offerings, She bowed twice, weeping sorrowfully. Finally, She covered the grave with thatch.
