• The Child Is Cured
  • After a couple of days, the woman, with her husband and child, came to see Sahng-jeh-nim. She carried the boy on her back and her husband carried a rooster, which was a present for Sahng-jeh-nim.
  • They bowed to Him and said, “Teacher, our son has recovered.” On his knees, the husband bowed repeatedly.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim smiled. “It is good that the child has been cured, but why have poor people like you brought a rooster?”
  • Then, He called for someone to bring some straw. Sahng-jeh-nim made a pair of sandals and put them on the rooster’s feet. With a serious face, Sahng-jeh-nim demanded of the rooster, “The price of these sandals is two dohn. Now buy them.” But the rooster shook the sandals off its feet.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim raised His hand and slapped its head. The startled rooster crowed. Sahng-jeh-nim said, “Good. Thank you for buying them. If you had agreed earlier, I would not have slapped you.”
  • Looking at the couple, Sahng-jeh-nim said, “Go back quickly. It is not good for poor folks to be kept from their work. Treasure your child whose health has been restored, and work hard so that he may live as well as others do.” They thanked Sahng-jeh-nim with many bows and left.
