• Sahng-jeh-nim Meets Cha Gyung-suk
  • In May, as Sahng-jeh-nim left Hyung-yul’s house, He said, “This trip will bring good fortune. I am going to meet a particular person. I will tell you about it later.”
  • Sahng-jeh-nim went to Yohng-ahm Village and stayed at the water mill. At a nearby inn, He met Cha Gyung-suk, an Eastern Learning adherent who was once the Il-jin Association leader for North Jul-la Province.
  • Gyung-suk was on his way from Jung-eup County to Jeonju County to take legal action against someone in a property dispute.
  • Having finished lunch, Gyung-suk was preparing to leave, when Sahng-jeh-nim, sloppily dressed and wearing a bamboo hat, came in accompanied by Gim Ja-hyun and another man.
  • To Gyung-suk, Sahng-jeh-nim seemed unpretentious and full of vigor.
  • His speech and behavior were simple and natural. Gyung-suk could not look directly into His piercing eyes.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim had a warm-hearted way of talking that reminded Gyung-suk of a spring breeze across the fields.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim could explain all things simply, His speech flowing like a great river.
  • His eloquence, which revealed His generous mind, rolled in a voice like thunder. His conduct seemed so immense that no one could categorize Him.
  • 10 Uncontrollably drawn to Sahng-jeh-nim and intoxicated by His grace, Gyung-suk greeted Him.
  • 11 Sahng-jeh-nim, who was drinking rice wine, responded warmly. He asked Gyung-suk to join them and ordered him a bowl of chicken soup.
  • 12 When the soup arrived, a bee came out of nowhere and flew into it. Gyung-suk wondered if it was a bad omen.
  • 13 Sahng-jeh-nim said, “Bees are highly organized.”
  • Cultivating People Is Like Raising Silkworms
  • 14 Gyung-suk asked Sahng-jeh-nim, “What is Your profession?”
    Sahng-jeh-nim smiled. “I act as a doctor.”
  • 15 “Where are You staying?”
“I am an eastbound sojourner, I am a westbound sojourer, I am a homeless sojourner in heaven and earth.”
  • 16 Gyung-suk had asked Sahng-jeh-nim where He lived because he meant to visit Him later. Sahng-jeh-nim’s answer sounded as if it would be impossible to find Him again. So, Gyung-suk decided not to leave Him.
  • 17 “How can someone become the leader of many?” Gyung-suk asked.
“In brief, hasty desire hinders attainment.”
  • 18 “I do not understand what You mean.”
  • 19 Sahng-jeh-nim explained, “Cultivating people is like raising silkworms. It does not matter whether some worms are put on the screen early or late. The important thing is to feed them according to their degree of development. When moved for the next growth stage, they are all moved together Whether they grow quickly or slowly depends on your devotion.”
