• When a Dragon Seeks Water
  • In Gu-rit-gohl Village, Gim Gwahng-chahn, who was disappointed that Sahng-jeh-nim had accepted Gyung-suk as a disciple, complained to Hyung-yul,
  • “Gyung-suk was an Eastern Learning adherent, but, for a while, he was a member of the pro-Japanese Il-jin Association, with whom he did many unrighteous things. It was unwise to accept him as a disciple. All of our efforts have been wasted.” For several days, he often complained, showing his growing bitterness toward Sahng-jeh-nim.
  • Hyung-yul was sorry to hear this. He said, “Let us go to our Teacher and ask Him about it.” Together, they went to see Sahng-jeh-nim, who at that time was in Tae-in County. They stayed there until evening, but, not knowing how to approach the matter, they did not speak of it.
  • Just as they were about to leave, Sahng-jeh-nim said to Gwahng-chahn, “You had better go back to Gu-rit-gohl Village with Hyung-yul.” Then, He took Hyung-yul aside.
  • Only then did Hyung-yul bring up Gwahng-chahn’s complaint and ask, “Why did You accept a man of such disposition?”
  • “When a dragon seeks water, it does not avoid a thorny bush standing in the way. Go home and pacify Gwahng-chahn’s resentment.”
  • Assigning Tasks
  • 10 Sahng-jeh-nim said, “When assigning tasks, I prefer people known for humor among their neighbors
  • 11 and for virtue and integrity everywhere else.”
  • 12 Sahng-jeh-nim enjoyed meeting young people.
