• A Policeman’s Life Is Saved
  • Accompanied by Gim Gahp-chil, Sahng-jeh-nim traveled through Bu-ahn County, Go-bu County, and other places. One night in Go-bu County, He stopped by Black Stone Inn.
  • Many gangs of bandits had been causing trouble in that area, even in broad daylight. A policeman disguised in civilian clothes came to the inn before starting that evening’s watch.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim said to the hostess, “Do not give that man anything to eat or drink. You are already poor, so you cannot afford a customer who might fail to pay his bill.”
  • Thinking that Sahng-jeh-nim had spoken rudely, the policeman cursed Him angrily and beat Him.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim laughed as He left the inn. “Being beaten by a dead man does not hurt Me in the least.”
  • The hostess said to the policeman, “What that man said was strange. There must be some reason for it. Catch up with Him and apologize. Then, ask what He meant by it.”
  • The policeman caught up with Sahng-jeh-nim, apologized, and asked Him what He had meant. Sahng-jeh-nim simply said, “Tonight, you had better not do your job. Go and hide somewhere instead.”
  • The policeman followed the advice, and late that night, bandits rushed into the inn and beat the hostess, demanding that she tell them of the policeman’s whereabouts.
  • Their intention was to kill him.
  • 10 The following morning, the policeman came to Sahng-jeh-nim to express his heartfelt thanks for saving his life.
