• The Disciples’ Meditation Practice
  • Sahng-jeh-nim would have the disciples sit in a circle, and then He would tell them to dismiss worldly thoughts and set their minds right. They were not allowed to sleep until early in the morning when the rooster crowed.
  • Sometimes, the disciples were told to sit cross-legged and keep perfectly still.
  • Even when Sahng-jeh-nim slept with His back turned to them, He was aware of their slightest movements and would censure them.
  • Asleep or awake, His awareness was not limited by sight or distance.
  • Even when looking the other way, He knew what they were doing as if He were looking right at them. There was no deceiving Him.
  • When Sahng-jeh-nim had the disciples meditate, He would have each of them offer fresh water and chant mantras.
  • 10 For this, they would each conscientiously bring a ceramic bowl or a gourd, which they filled with clean water and placed in front of themselves.
  • 11 They drew their chins slightly inward, closing their outer eyes and opening their inner eyes. Gazing upon the bowl, they chanted.
  • 12 If someone was meditating for the first time, Sahng-jeh-nim would have that person offer fresh water in a small pot.
  • 13 Sahng-jeh-nim had the disciples kneel when meditating. He had them chant the Chil-sung-gyung Mantra first and then the Gae-byuk Mantra.
  • 14 When it came to the topic of meditation, Sahng-jeh-nim would not teach all the disciples directly. Instead, He would teach Hyung-yul, who would then teach the others.
  • 15 Those who could not fit in the medicine room sat on the wooden floor outside the room, in the yard, in the alley, or even in the field.
  • 16 Those who did well in their meditation could even see mudfish or carp in their bowls.
