• Bringing Forth the Greatest One in Heaven and Earth
  • One day in the winter of 1908, when staying in Dae-heung Village, Sahng-jeh-nim offered a bowl of fresh water, crouched down on the wooden floor, and then ordered Ahn Nae-sung, “Nae-sung, tie up My body.”
  • Afraid, Nae-sung pleaded, “I would rather die. How could I dare tie up my venerable Teacher?”
  • “Why do you hesitate to carry out My order? Tie Me up tightly.”
  • In tears, Nae-sung finally carried out the order and tightly bound Sahng-jeh-nim’s body.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim thundered, “Nae-sung, strike My body strongly with a big club while shouting, ‘Is Il-deung-bahng-moon the best? Is Ee-deung-bahng-moon the best? It is Il-deung-bahng-moon.’ This is a program. Hurry, beat Me!
  • If you don’t, you will be greatly harmed by spirits, so beat Me mercilessly.”
  • With no other choice, Nae-sung struck Him with a club, but only pretended to do it strongly.
  • “Will you die then, you fool!” Sahng-jeh-nim shouted. “Your heels should lift from the ground when you hit Me. If not, heaven and earth will kill you.”
  • Overwhelmed by such a stern command, Nae-sung yelled, “Is Il-deung-bahng-moon the best? Is Ee-deung-bahng-moon the best? It is Il-deung-bahng-moon.” At the same time, he struck three times with all his might.
  • 10 Sahng-jeh-nim rolled on the floor, screaming, “Oh, he is killing Me! The one whose name I changed to sung (成), meaning ‘accomplish,’ is killing Me.”
  • 11 A while later, Sahng-jeh-nim laughed out loud. “Now it is done. By making Ee-deung-bahng-moon fall over, you, Il-deung-bahng-moon, are the superior one.”
  • 12 Sahng-jeh-nim then ordered Nae-sung, “Using a tobacco pipe, pretend to shoot Me with a gun. Make the sound bang! bang! as though you are determined to kill.” Doing as he was told, Nae-sung pretended to shoot Sahng-jeh-nim.
  • 13 “Why did You use Nae-sung to get rid of Ee-deung-bahng-moon?” a disciple asked.
  • 14 Sahng-jeh-nim explained, “I used the family name Ahn.”
