• Medicine Must Be Used on the Earth
  • The mother of Bahk Soon-yuh of Gu-rit-gohl Village was in her sixties when she fell seriously ill. Her condition was critical and promised no chance of recovery.
  • Soon-yuh started to prepare for her funeral, and he even brewed wine for the ceremony.
  • Hearing of this, Sahng-jeh-nim went to their house and said to him, “Go to the market and pray in earnest that your preparation for the period of mourning will not be needed.”
  • After Soon-yuh left for the market, Sahng-jeh-nim went out into the yard carrying a bowl of four-herb medicine and took twelve steps away from the mother’s room. At that spot, He had a rectangular hole dug, and He poured the medicine into it.
  • “Since the sickness has almost brought her to her burial, the medicine must be used on the earth,” He said, then left for home. From then on, her condition improved steadily.
  • On the way home, Sahng-jeh-nim met Soon-yuh, who was returning from the market. Sahng-jeh-nim asked him, “At the market, to whom did you address your prayer?”
  • “I prayed to You, Teacher.”
  • “Bring Me the wine you had prepared for the funeral,” Sahng-jeh-nim said with a smile, and invited the neighbors to come and drink.
