• A Task Is Done Easily If Spirits Help
  • One day in 1908, a multitude of spirits gathered in the yard outside the medicine room. They were armed with spears, swords, and clubs, but were dressed in modern military uniforms.
  • Fearful, Ho-yun asked Sahng-jeh-nim, “Are they going to kill someone with those swords?”
  • “No. They are commander spirits. Earlier, they ate well at a shaman’s house. Now, they would not accept any food offered.” One spirit passed by and carefully studied Sahng-jeh-nim’s mood.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim called out a spirit’s name; immediately, the spirits formed two ranks, and one of them saluted.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim said, “Come closer.”
The spirit approached and bowed. “Yes?”
  • Sahng-jeh-nim ordered him to go to a certain place to carry out a task.
  • “Why did You tell him to go there?” Ho-yun asked.
  • “When a living person performs a task, it can be done easily if spirits help. A great general died with unsatisfied vengeance. This vengeance must be resolved. Just because a person dies, it does not mean the person is permanently dead.”
