• Sahng-jeh-nim Summons the Spirits of Mountains
  • One day in 1905, Sahng-jeh-nim went to Du-ree Peak in Jeonju County with Hyung-yul and Ho-yun.
  • Little Ho-yun asked, “Why do we always walk in the mountains when we could have a pleasant time walking in the fields?”
  • “I come to speak to the spirits inside the mountains,” Sahng-jeh-nim answered. “You cannot see them in there, but I can see and hear them.”
  • He climbed to the top of Du-ree Peak and called out to Oh-bohng Mountain, Chil-bohng Mountain, and Yook-bohng Mountain. The spirits of these mountains came out and kneeled in front of Sahng-jeh-nim.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim said, “In the future, heaven will first say, ‘Oh-bohng Mountain, raise the flag.’ After Oh-bohng Mountain raises a flag and dances, Du-ree Peak, Chil-bohng Mountain, and Yook-bohng Mountain will step forward one after another.
  • Then, all other mountains will step forward, carrying flags and dancing. At that time, we will all hold hands. Thus, make the flags.” Sahng-jeh-nim assigned a color for each mountain’s flag.
  • He then said, “Let us see who is the first to make a flag.” The mountain spirits withdrew, each claiming it would be the first to make a flag.
  • The Spirits Inside Mountains
  • One day, Sahng-jeh-nim said to Ho-yun, “Mountains have spirits inside them. When there are torrential rains, the mountain spirits, fearing a rockslide, leave the parts of the mountain in which they are sitting and find other places to sit.
  • When this happens, it looks as if a cloud is walking.”
  • Qi Should Be Put in Motion
  • 10 Sahng-jeh-nim drew red moons and black moons on sheets of paper and made flags with them.
  • 11 Seeing countless black, red, and blue flags piled like stacks of books,
  • 12 Ho-yun asked, “What are those things You keep making?”
  • 13 “There will come a day when these will be used. Qi should be put in motion. These are all useful flags.”
