• The Complaint of Hyung-yul’s Daughter-in-Law
  • Sahng-jeh-nim usually stayed at Hyung-yul’s house, and the expense of feeding all the disciples was not small.
  • One day, following Sahng-jeh-nim’s order, Hyung-yul told his daughter-in-law to prepare lunch for the disciples.
  • She grumbled to herself, “My father-in-law is so crazy about a wizard that he makes his family suffer and leads his household to ruin.” Then, she said aloud, “We have run out of rice. I can’t serve lunch.”
  • When Hyung-yul reported this, Sahng-jeh-nim said, “In the kitchen, in a pot in front of the charcoal pile, there is some rice. Go and threaten to break the pot with a grain pounder.”
  • Hyung-yul went into the kitchen, looked into the pot, and found that it was, indeed, full of rice.
  • He picked up a wooden grain pounder and said, “I’m going to break this rice pot.” His daughter-in-law seized his wrist to stop him. She then cooked all the rice, but there was not enough to feed everyone.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim said, “As we eat this, she is thinking, ‘If more people come in the evening, there will be no rice.’ How can I endure her furrowed brow?”
  • “Then, please have some rice brought to us,” requested Hyung-yul.
“The rice for this evening’s dinner will come,” Sahng-jeh-nim replied. That evening, someone brought a sack of rice.
