• The Practice of Saving Life
  • Once, when Sahng-jeh-nim was staying at the house of Gim Sung-gook in Bool-ga-jee Village, Sung-gook went with Duk-chahn to trap pheasants.
  • A flock of pheasants landed near the traps and pecked at the food left as bait.
  • The two disciples were delighted at this and said that they would catch many, but the pheasants just ate the food and flew away, leaving the disciples bewildered.
  • When they went back to the house, Sahng-jeh-nim said, “Your practice is to capture; My practice is to save.” Struck by what Sahng-jeh-nim said, they went back out and withdrew the traps. They never hunted pheasants again.
